Floppa is an iconic internet cat originating from photographs of a caracal named Gregory. The meme emerged on Instagram in December 2019, gaining traction among ironic meme accounts. The name "Floppa" was coined in late January 2020 by user young.taxi, and the meme spread further in the following months, evolving to include various medium-sized and small cats.
Despite initial popularity confined to Instagram, Floppa memes became widespread from April 2020 onward, extending to platforms like Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, and iFunny. The meme's popularity surged in May 2020, leading to the creation of a dedicated subreddit, r/bigfloppa, on June 4th.
Throughout 2020 and into 2021, Floppa remained a prominent figure in meme culture, particularly among Russian-speaking communities where it was known as "Большой Шлёпа" (Big Slap).
